Giant UNO Card Shuffler: None Fits, and How to Shuffle the Big Deck
No home card shuffler takes Giant UNO cards, ours included. Mattel prints the card at 5.5 by 8.5 inches. A home shuffler's tray and rollers fit poker-size stock, 2.5 by 3.5 inches. A Giant UNO card arrives three inches too wide and five inches too tall for the feed. It is a fit fact, the same one that rules out tarot decks. The deck still mixes well by hand, and one hand shuffle scales to a card you cannot bend: the wash.
How big a Giant UNO card is
Mattel's listing for Giant UNO NFL gives the card as 5.5 by 8.5 inches (Mattel, Giant UNO NFL). Its standard Giant UNO listing skips the measurement and calls the cards three times larger (Mattel, Giant UNO). Both editions ship 108 cards. Mattel's instruction sheet for the standard edition lists 76 number cards, 24 action cards, two Wild, four Wild Draw Four and two customizable Wild cards (Mattel, Giant UNO instructions).
A standard UNO card measures about 2.2 by 3.5 inches (ExpertBeacon, Uno card dimensions). A poker-size card measures 2.5 by 3.5 inches, or 63.5 by 88.9 mm (PrintNinja, playing card dimensions). A Giant UNO card covers about six times the area of a standard UNO card, 46.75 square inches against 7.7. Each edge is about two and a half times as long.
A standard UNO deck holds 112 cards (Mattel, UNO); the UNO card shuffler guide covers that deck. The Giant deck stays at 108, with two customizable Wilds instead of three and no Shuffle Hands card.
Why no shuffler takes them
A home shuffler is a tray that squares the deck, a slot that passes one card at a time and rollers spaced for a card about two and a half inches wide. Every one of those dimensions assumes poker-size stock, and a card three inches wider than the one the tray was cut for does not go in at all.
Nothing is wrong with the card or the machine; they are two sizes. The same geometry rules out tarot decks at about 2.75 by 4.75 inches (sleeved-cards guide), and Giant UNO sits far beyond those.
How to shuffle Giant UNO cards
Start with what not to do. A riffle asks you to bend half the deck across your thumbs and let the corners spring together. A 54-card half of 5.5 by 8.5 stock does not bend across most thumbs. Forcing it creases the cards. The riffle is the wrong move at this size for most hands.
Dealing into piles and restacking is not a shuffle either, however thorough it feels. Every card's destination is fixed by its position in the deck, so the same starting order gives the same result every time. The Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules allow pile shuffling once per game, to count the deck, and for nothing else (MTR 3.10, effective June 30, 2025).
The wash is the method that scales. Spread the cards face down, put both palms flat on them and slide them around in loose circles for a minute, then gather and square the deck against the table. Persi Diaconis and Soumik Pal report the test behind that minute in Shuffling cards by spatial motion (arXiv:1708.08147, 2017). Stanford students washed a 52-card deck 100 times each at 15, 30 and 60 seconds and checked the results against statistics such as how many originally adjacent pairs stayed adjacent and where the original top and bottom cards landed. Fifteen seconds was far from random. Randomness set in at about 30 seconds. Quanta Magazine's 2015 account counts ten tests, all passed at 30 seconds and at one minute (Quanta, For Persi Diaconis' Next Magic Trick).
Those numbers came from a 52-card deck. A Giant UNO deck is 108 cards at six times the size, so give it room and the full minute. Laid edge to edge, the deck covers about 35 square feet, so the wash happens on the floor or across a cleared table with the cards overlapping. Keep every card moving; a card parked under your palm did not shuffle. The wash in depth is in how to shuffle cards when your hands hurt.
If the deck is clumped, open with the overhand in small packets: stand the deck on the table, pull a few cards at a time off the top and drop them in a new order, then wash. The overhand alone is a weak mixer. Pemantle's 1989 analysis, sharpened by Johan Jonasson in 2006, puts its mixing time at order n² log n for n cards. For 52 cards that runs to thousands of passes (Jonasson, The overhand shuffle mixes in Θ(n² log n) steps). Use it to loosen the deck, not to finish it.
Standard UNO is a different story
Lotus takes standard UNO and poker-size decks. The 112-card UNO deck loads whole into the one center tray, and the slightly narrower UNO stock feeds reliably, a confirmed fit covered in the UNO card shuffler guide. Each press is one inverse riffle: soft silicone rollers deal the deck card by card into two piles, you restack, and a pass takes about five seconds. Three passes suit game night, and about seven bring a single 52-card deck to near-random. Giant UNO, tarot and other oversized cards do not load, because the feed is sized for poker-size cards; the card compatibility table has the full list. If your table plays both sizes, the Lotus V2 takes the standard deck and the wash takes the giant one.
